I know there was an article about them in TFH magazine once. They like to dig in the substrate (so use sand or fine gravel). They also like low amounts of light but prefer a planted-tank (easy-to-grow low-light plants). You can feed them market shrimp and stuff like that but they are slow feeders so choose tank mates accordingly. These guys are amphibians so they need good water quality as well.
I have not kept them but I am curious as to what type you are getting. The more terrestrial ones do best in loose, damp, loamy soil with leal clutter, and tend to feed on ants, termites, and small amphibians, the aquatic ones eat maunly soft bodied inverts and tadpoles.
well plan on not seeing them very often lol. They will sometimes breathe air from the surface. I believe they are capable of underwater and out of water breathing. I had one for a year or two when I was younger but I really can't tell you a whole lot other than it will sneak about through gravel constantly.
I will take pics after I pic them up probally have the pics posted by saturday or sunday they are in the group of fish I bought from a guy who is getting out of the hobby I bought all of his fish
everyone has covered the basics...they do like meaty foods, i used shrimp and smelt and frozen krill myself. the other main thing is cover every stinking tiny hole on the top of your tank or they'll find their way out, i lost my breeding age female to a hole for the heater cord.
they are live bearers mine gave birth to six babies, they ate the same things only smaller. keep them clean and careful they'll try to eat small frogs or at least drown them trying too (voice of experience with them).
i've been looking for them myself eventually i'll locate some and when i do i'll be setting up a nice planted jungle for them
btw i will probably mangle the the spelling but the most common aquatic species is
typhlonectes natans or somethign similar to that.
best of luck with them and watch for skin conditions, they seem to develop those when they dont get enough material to burrow in.
