i might be getting a corn snake. next week. there about 1' now. what would be an apropriate cage size for life. im only geting one. also should it be glass are a mesh/screen fesh air encloser.

personally I like plastic tubs or a viv (i.e. wood or plastic with a glass door). 1ft basically a hatchling. You could keep it something smaller, and upgrade as they grow. A 12x8" would be fine until they are about 2 ft. I duno something like a 5-10 gallon if you have to go glass (think that's right for US). However you'll have to make sure the viv does not have a gap in doors, even a slight one and they'll push through. That's why I like tubs that you can drill air holes in and are perfectly secure. Either that or a glass tank with an adaquate escape proof lid. I think it 6 - 12 qt tubs is about right.

5 to 10 gallon? they are gonna grow pretty quick..... a 20 long would be a good choice, could get a couple yrs from that i think......i myself would do something like a 40 breeder when it gets to about 3 feet...... lots of people say dont do screen tops cause they dry out the animal but i use screen tops on eveything. i like using heat bulbs instead of under the tank heaters. def need to make sure no matter what you use, make sure its escape proof. snakes can get out of anything if you give them the chance.

Yeah, prob will, I don't like aquariums to keep snakes in tbh, and always prefered tubs that are cheap and chearful, escape proof, and can upgrade as they grow and have the benefit of keeping them in smaller enclosures as youngsters as can still do it cheap.
Dry out the animal...? it's a corn.

i know, but you should hear how some people talk about that stuff on other forums..i got my marine toad in a screen top! lol but they talk about it in the monitor forum i go to and i have heard it mentioned in other forums for other reptiles and amphibians. i thought that was why you werent suggesting a screen top. i agree, tubs and shoe boxes are great if you are doing a breeding set up and or have a ton of snakes. but since he has one he might just want it out in the open so he can see it.

i was thinking a 20long. but i do have a 40g rubbermade tub im not using:D

It's up to you I guess, corns aren't like royals to the same extent as needing the closeness of a small enclosure, but you still get some that are, and I prefer to have them in smaller secure enclosures so they are happy. 40g imo is going to be far far too big for what is a hatchling (but i'm sure theres someone out there that's done it with success). A 20 long is what a lot of people would consider the min. for an ADULT.

yeah, i agree a 40 breeder would be big. but i did say when it got to 3 feet then i would do a 40 breeder. corns can reach over 4 feet.

Yup, my males over 4 foot already.

Well they have the ability to get anywhere from 30" to 6ft, although for captive corns it's usually not over 5 and ones over 4 ft are predominantly males.
