Cherry shrimp are nice. Start out with a group of like 20-30. Not very hard to keep at all. They are more sensitive to things like nitrates and tempature changes etc. So just keep the water stable and they will thrive. My shrimp are very active and breed alot. Sometimes the breeding will stop all of a sudden. I dont know what goes on, but then it takes off again. Right now the shrimp are in a huge breeding mode. Few got eggs and more than a dozen are saddled. I just got the dwarf crays, dont know when I will see eggs.
I started out with a tiny piece of moss about the size of maybe a gold ball. I didnt do anything special but let it grow. No trimming, no special light, no fertilizer etc. It grows slow though. Months and months to get that big.
I have a sponge filter, heater and a small HOB filter and thats it. Ive heard a good rule is 10 adult shrimp per 1 gallon. So a 10 gallon is acceptable for atleast 100 shrimp. Ive had close to that amont before, then took soem out and used them as feeders. Ive got around 40-50 in there now, maybe even more.
