So I wanted to surprise my girlfriend today with an upgrade for her Betta...I got a 2 gallon bowl and as a substrate I used Vita Sand...http://www.petco.com/product/107863/Zoo-Med-Vita-Sand-in-Sonoran-White.aspx
When I put the sand in and filled the bowl it was very cloudy, so I changed the water numerous times before it became clear. I would mix around the sand and make sure it didn't make the water cloudy anymore. I then put in a few amazonian decor pieces and used a few drops of Aquasafe Water Conditioner. After a few hours I put the Betta in the water.
The Betta died the next day
Was the Vita Sand the source of death? I didn't do much research on Calcium Carbonate Sand in a freshwater (submersed) environment and I think this is what killed the Betta.
