can somebody post pics of their kingsnake habitats? what do your tank setups look like. I am receiving one of these from my boss, who will be teaching me how to care for it in my classroom. I just wanted to put together a nice tank for him.

Hey. I have a Black Kingsnake, and she is the greatest. I cannot post any pictures, but the basics of her habitat are as follows:

Aspen bedding (PURE--cedar and pine can harm the snake)
she has a large water bowl, one that she can fully submerge herself in, which she does all the time, dont think this is normal, my girl was a rescue and has never been 'normal'
A large cave, one for her to fit herself in nicely (not to big, not to small, you can use tupperwear or cardboard to make this)

thats pretty much it. they are not really arboreal, but i have some arbutus in her tank so she can climb. THe tank itsself is a 40 gallon (48x18x24) and she seems to use all the room she has. as soon as my tegu and redtail boa get out of their larger tanks, she will be moving into one of those. They dont need elaborate tanks, but will like to skulk around in a tank and be more active is he/she feels safe. therefore foliage is a definite plus.

PS kingsnakes are great escape artists - mine has gotten away twice. BE WARNED I found her both times on top of my kribo's tank (another snake) as she was trying to get into his tank to eat him.

just make sure you have a really good locking lid.

if you want good pictures and info go to www.kingsnake.com its a great site

hope this helps

Steph

:iagree: but if you want, you can use Care Fresh as well. My friend has 3 kings and a boa and he uses CareFresh. BTW, his Eastern goes CRAZY when you come near the tank. It has jumped out of the tank twice when he went to feed it. Kingsnakes are great snakes.

Steph, pics of the Kribo please! I love Indigos.

i agree, i've had over a dozen californian kingsnakes since i got into herps and i loved them all. i currently have a 4'8" eastern king and she is absolutly insane at feeding time. if i have a mouse and go to open her cage she will come out with her mouth wide open trying to eat anything that moves, she's the sweetest snake ever but when it's feed time you'd better watch your fingers :grinno: but i love her anyway. a 40g breeder is a great setup for kings, or anything with a base longer than 36" and wider than 16", they're a primarily terrestrial species but if you put in a couple climbing branches they will be appreciated.

sorry the best i can do my cali is in the tank below i used 3" of coconut husk comes compact and expands with moisture great for spot cleaning.
i large water dish a hollow log for hiding and a light for my veiwing only .
simple is better i found when i over decorated the tank it became too difficult to keep clean.

thank you. I was given "cypress bedding" which is allegedly safe for kingsnakes according to the company's information. i got a large waterbowl and a fake hollowed out log for him to hide under.

i had a 6'6" cali king about 8 yrs back. she was a beauty!

id build a plywood enclosure with a glass front and just fill with repti bark, find a stump to put in there, a few branches leaned against the sides, a few largerocks, maybe a 10 gallon bathing pool and ur set!

good luck! they are great snakes....very strong constrictors too, so be careful as well!
