This is what I woke up to this morning. I need some help. I thought I had 2 females but that wasn't the case. Now I am going to post a bunch of pictures and I need to know which is the male and which is the female. I know there are a bunch of con experts out there. In case anyone is wondering, I have no plans of keeping any of these being they are hybrids. They laid a couple weeks ago but they weren't fertile.

Thanks to all that respond!

Oh the one pic of the calico was taken with the flash and the rest aren't.

From my experience.. Which mind you is very limited to about 10 total fish which includes VKFU's pair..

Well that is just still guessing ;)

But with these species ;) It is a good sign of the female when that is the main protector of the spot... The male will follow and chase farther off than the female.

That's not what I wanted to hear:( I was hoping the calico was a male but I think you all are right. The calico stays the closest to the fry. Last time they laid the HRP didn't want anything to do with the eggs but this time he is being protective.

gorgeous calico

the calico is definitely the female and the HRP is definitely the male. female HRP's usually don't have any red in their dorsal fin or tail...that is a characteristic of the male. by the way, if you ask me I'd say your calico was already crossed at some point with a HRP which unfortunately has become very common practice in fish farms since the HRP was imported. farms all over the US are crossing HRP's to convicts to get a more colorful, blue convict with the breeding rate of the normal convict.
