California bans SeaWorld from breeding Orca

Hey all,
So I was browsing MSN this morning and happened on an article about the commission in CA endorsing SeaWorld to put in a $100 million expansion/facility in their park for the orcas, but then banned them from breeding any orcas in the park at all haha.

Thoughts?

My initial opinion on this is that if they are going to allow SeaWorld to have these giant creatures under captive care and audience...would it not be beneficial to at least allow them to captively breed the animals instead of taking them wild from the ocean? Which is, as I assume, how they get their whales? I could be wrong but so far I've never heard of anyone breeding these guys in their basements to sell lol.

Just curious as to MFK's opinion.
 
1This whole free the whales blackfish business has gotten way out of hand.

Cali can ban them from breeding in Cali but not in Texas or Florida. They can still breed the whales just not in Cali. What will make a difference is if Cali bans them from transporting whales in from out of state. They don't breed the whales and ban importation from other states then they won't have a stock of them in cali once the ones they currently have pass away. Otherwise they'll just transport from TX or FL. Its illegal for them to get wild orcas and a practice that's stopped before the 90s (I believe the last capture was the late 70s). The only reason they have them now is because of breeding programs. Its the same with the dolphins they do not get dolphins from the wild and haven't for about the same amount of time.

Like it or not people have spent a lot of money on scientific research to learn more about, to help and to save wild populations of orcas and many other animals because of the connections they make at facility's like this. Unlike the medias portrait they are well loved and taken care of.

interesting! I had no idea they were breeding these animals anywhere!

Again I had no idea, I just thought it was an interesting article, I am certainly no expert when it comes to the practices of giant ocean mammals haha.
 
It's no problem if you have questions your welcome to PM me. Its done via artificial insemination much like some cattle (same concept).

That would make sense and what I assumed, seeing as I don't see anyone spending the money to set the natural "mood" for giant animals such as that haha.
 
Imo although I heard how great they treat Orca's in captivity just like Elephants the whales are too intelligent, and so social to be held in those facilities...and yes I cried when I saw Free Willy :)
 
Not surprised if someone on this forum has an orca seems like half the population have fish tanks too small for their fish lol

Hello; My next thought is how dissapointing at many levels. Does not sound like a fun job. Like cows, huh? My neighbor has a small heard of black angus cattle. His bull still does it the old fashioned way. One of the girls got thru the fence a few days ago and was in my back yard. Left me some yard deposits. I like the cows better than the sheep that were there before. The cows smell better.
