You know, after reading the safety sticky, I'd really just rather not get into this =P
I think I'll stick with something a little more tame, like turtles and mbuna.

I assume there's no way to effectively and humanely remove a stingray's barb, right?
 
just dont touch rays lol
 
they are fairly tame as long as you dont poke and prod it, its self defense they arent going to attack you with it they dont even use it to catch food, its purely defense like the 2000 ravens
 
In CA, permits are given for legitimate studies by institutions. Getting one costs the licensee. Plus, the facilities must pass an inspection before the permit is issued (another charge involved). Also, the licensee will have spot inspections to verify compliance (yep, another fee will be charged).

The chances of being stung are low provided you watch what you are doing. The problem with you living in Californa is pretty much unavoidable. You are out of rays unless you move.
