I had a tank of Tanganyikan cichlids that got htese nasty little beasties. While they are often introduced w/ live-bearers, my outbreak hitched a ride inside some secondary invert host w/ plants. The worms litterally wiped out all but 2 fish before I was able to discover what they were & how to treat! I highly recomment treating. While your bichir may not have a problem yet, parasites are notorious for not causing major harm till the host is sick or otherwise under stress. Then WHAM...they hit them hard & can do serious damage, even to the point of death. The best med to treat w/ is a common pig dewormer called levamisole hrdrochloride. It goes by the brand name of Tramisol & is available at many farm stores (no prescription necessary). Usually just a single treatment is necessary for a given outbreak. Additionally, if you're using live-bearers as feeders, you can use levamisole prophalactively to treat the feeders prior to feeding them to your bichir(s) & other large fish.
The live-bearer expert that writes for TFH once wrote an article on the dosage. I'll see if I can find it. As I recall, very little goes a VERY long way.
Please don't ignore an infestation Camallanus worms as they are highly contageous & can even spread to other tanks via nets & other shared fish-keeping tools.
