I'm interested in picking up a trio of red/yellows and am curious to see who owns these pint sized monitors? I've owned everything from Argus to Niles, but never bothered with these guys. Now, I'm getting the monitor bug and want to get back into them. I know care requirements, but if anyone cares to offer bits of advice or pics of their setups, they'd be much appreciated on my end. Thanks guys!

Give them a burrow box about 10-12" deep minimum; 24" deep substrate in the box will be best for them. If you can give them climbing space, they would LOVE that as well. They don't need it, but they will use it just as much as being on the ground -- no matter how high.

Do you still have your old monitor enclosures? I find Ackies use ALL the space they inhabit, so no enclosure is too big for them -- they will use the whole thing. They are highly active and are constantly moving.

Also buy them as hatchlings, they don't take new members in well; the re-establishment of picking order can be dangerous, which fortunately I never had to deal with.

I don't have any of my old enclosures, so I'm starting from scratch. I was actually planning on making a pen type enclosure to center a room, probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 6x5x3. Just curious. I planned on keeping them trio seperate for a few months until I was sure they were growing well and feeding to my liking. Do you think I'll encounter any of the chaos you mention by doing it this way? Also, I've read that decomposed granite is becoming popular with these guys. Can I fill the entire enclosure with this stuff? I realize it will make for headaches come breeding time, but I'll keep a shovel handy!

If you want to do that way... I guess. I just have mine on tile and several big bins for them to dig in. Easier for me to grab a bin, do a head count, check for burrows and dump the substrate out and then replace it.
