I'm upgrading to a larger tank soon and I'm thinking of going with minimal substrate - just a dusting of sand and gravel on the bottom. I'm thinking of only having enough to cover half the bottom of the tank. My question is this - will my Clowns be happy with this as I know they enjoy rooting about in the existing substrate? I've already used this approach on a smaller tank and like it a lot (see pics).

my clowns live, happily, in bare bottom

I think its more important they they be kept in schools thou I usually give at least one small hiding spot for them, but otherwise they should be fine...

Thanks for that.....There are 4 Clowns currently in the tank - 2 large 2 small with 5 little ones growing out in another tank. As you can see from these pics, my tanks have plenty of hiding places for them!

Awesome CL's! Mine have a medium gravel that they can't burrow into, and they are doing great!

I had four of mine in a bare bottom for a month or so. I don't beleive they liked it. They were skittish and not their normal playful selves.
