In the market for a new computer and loking for advice from people in the field or with personal experience. Any info on the quad core processors? Also having monitor problems. It's a flat screen hp, about 4 years old. Just starting blacking out. If I shut the monitor off and power up it will come on and go back off. Any ideas? Is it worth fixing or just replace it with the cpu? I know ahard to diagnose with just a description. Any help is appreciated.

thats kinda hard to read.
since you have a 4 year old computer you cant simply pop in a quad core cpu.your gonna have to upgrade the mother board to fit the new cpu.how much money do you have to spend?you can get you self a very decent comp these days for around 800$

somthing like-
dual core cpu
good graphic card{if you dont need this put the money into the cpu then}
1-2gigs of ram
17-19 in monitor
all the necessary components

Sorry for the confusion. I'm not loking at upgrading but replacing. I was looking for some feedback on the quad vs. dual core. The monitor question was should I fix or replace. Best buy has a package right now of a quad core, 500gb hd, 3gb ram, printer and monitor for 1100.

Quad core wont do squat for most desktop PCs. Most software isn't optimised for mulitcore processors. Server environments where a machine is running multiple tasks will get some benefit. In the future I imagine more games etc will be written with multiple CPU support, but it hasn't really happened yet. Save on the CPU cost and just get a dual core, add some extra ram and a better graphics card (if you are into gaming) and you will have a better machine.

The screen sounds like it has a dodgy power supply. May be repairable, but I think you would be better to get a new monitor bundled with the new PC. Cost would probably be similar and you get a new screen with a warranty :)

Cheers

Ian

Edit.. I see you are looking at 3gb of ram, good, and no point going over that with current desktops. Check what the graphics card is, huge difference in performance across the range there.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like it is no longer an issue. Just picked up a computer from a friend. Not the very best but still pretty good. Don't have all the specs but it's a dual core 2.2ghz processor, 300 gb hd, 2 gb ram, 19 inch monitor, speakers, keyboard and wireless mouse with Windows media center XP pro. Best part, it was free.

good deal... hope to see you more often now:D
