So I have an opportunity to apply for a lateral position at work. There are a few fitness hurdles to get over before I will be given the position, none of which I am concerned about except one.I have to be able to successfully complete an eleven minute mile run...If I were younger such a run time would not be too big a deal but at this point, having not done any real running for quite a few years I think I really need to build my lungs up and condition my body for the test.Sooo,if any of the avid runners here can give me any advice or tips it would be very much appreciated.Thanks.

My advice would be to run just a little more than you really have to be able to. Runnin a mile anda half 1 or 2 times a day will really help you

The average person walks at a little over 4 feet/second. In order to run a mile in 11 minutes you have to do 8 feet/second. Shouldn't be very hard to do unless you are severely out of shape. To train, start off running a little and then walking. Keep at it and you will be able to do it in no time.

I honestly think if you take it slow, run and speedwalk for a couple of days. then slow jog non stop for the rest of the week you'd be able to hit a mile under 11 no problem

I find that when I get back into running after a lay off that the first week is the hardest. after that your body is ready for it. that's my experience

Ask Robmcd for some tips, he's an extreme runner and does product testing for athletic shoes. My advice is to go to http://www.mappedometer.com/ map out a one mile trail around your neighborhood, and time yourself. That way you'll know where you're starting off and how much improvement you'll need.

Due to my job I only run a couple months a year but never go more than a few months without bicycling and never get to out of shape. When Im starting out after a layoff I usually want to stop 5-10 minutes in, I then remind myself how much I hated those 5-10 minutes and that it would have been all for nothing if I stop.

Thanks for the plug man. :)

An 11 minute mile is just a little more than a brisk walk. My advice to you would be to just go out and see just what you have in you. I recommend that you go hit up your local high school football field. These usually have a running track that runs around them. 4 laps around a standard HS track is 1 mile. Start there.
Also, what is your height and weight?? Do you have running shoes??
There are also some great apps that you can download free to your smartphone that can really aid you to achieve your goals. Don't doubt yourself, you DO have it in you. Just think to your self, ''I need to cover 5280 feet in 11 minutes''...

Measure off a mile distance. See how long it takes you to just walk that far. Next day start off walking, then run a bit, then walk, then run a bit. Each new day run a bit more and walk a bit less. Soon you should be able to run the entire way.

Thanks guys, and yeah I was going to message Rob as I recall him mentioning his running but then I decided to discuss this openly.
