I am set on starting a 20gal shrimp tank. i don't know what breed yet. But I want to see all of your setups to get a idea for mine. Either a full tank or just close up on sections will be great. Please post away to spread the shrimp madness to me.

I am NOT a shrimp keeper...but, I did buy 3 Ghost Shrimp on a whim once. I lost one as soon as I put them in the tank, never did see him again. The other two though have been in a 10 gallon nursery tank for quite awhile. There's been several Community fish and Cichlids in with them at one time or another (I use the tank for isolation if I don't have fry at the time). I keep forgetting that the shrimp are in there lol.

I'll admit, they're pretty cool actually and I have grown to like having them. Just a suggestion for you.

Good luck!

I'd say go with cherry reds.

For most (atleast what i've heard here) ghost shrimp are a weird thing, for most they just die off, but very rarely do they breed.

there seems to be a much higher success rate with cherry reds.

right now i'm keeping about 10 ghosts in my 55, they're thriving but not breeding :(

First you have to decide how serious you are about keeping shrimp. If you are ready to keep crystal clear and pristine water you can keep any shrimp. If you just want some cool shrimp that are hardy and easy to take care of, go with cherry shrimp. I have a 15 gallon planted tank with cherry, blue tiger, amano, and bamboo. They are all doing great. I currently see 4 or 5 berried cherries. I do 50% weekly water changes and feed 6 days a week. Hoping to have hundreds of cherries soon!

Heres a picture I took a few weeks ago of the shrimp getting on an algae wafer a few seconds after I dropped it in. You can see cherries and 2 blue tigers.

I need to get a recent full tank shot. The marsilea (carpet plant) has grown in a ton.

P.S. Ghost shrimp are known to be very aggressive and will kill your other shrimp. I dont recommend keeping them with others!

Sampster...that's a sweet shot :)

I was thinking maybe black tiger shrimp and yellow shrimp and maybe if i can find some blue bee shrimp and I may add a few snails. I want to plant too.

Go with blue pearls of yellows, i enjoyed them a lot, plus when you have too many you can sell them for roughly $2 each. They are really fun to watch and Its nice to see a hobby pay for itself sometimes :-) Goodluck!

Good luck finding black tiger shrimp! A dozen of those can cost you over a thousand bucks. Kinda silly IMO.

Blue pearls and yellow shrimp will interbreed and cause some pretty ugly offspring. You cant put any Neocardinia species together but you can do anything else.

I might just got the blue pearls then. And maybe add another kind some other time. For now ill do blue pearls :)

personally i would just start with cherries, so it doesn't put a big whole in your wallet if you lose a few. I would check out plantedtank.net for shrimp and info on them. Also check aquabid. i got 30 cherries for $28 shipped.
