the Office living in the now...
Ladies and Gentlemen,

For the first in my aquarium hobby, I would like to try and breed shrimp.

The question:

Is it possible to breed: bamboo shrimp, blue shrimp, bumble bee shrimp, Red Cherry Cleaner, Tiger shrimp, and Zebra Shrimp all in a 40 gallon tank?

If not, what combo's would work. I am trying to have a community of different types.

Thanks,
Bomber

Your best bet for breeding shrimp would be the Red Cherry Shrimp, They are the best if you are just starting out,You could start with like 20 and in 3 months you will have 60 or so, I sell mine to LFS for $1.50ea

Can any other shrimp species coexist with the cherry red shrimp?

The thing with shrimp is,the same species will interbreed, and you will end up with brown shrimp. So mixing more than one of a certain species, with different colors, is not a good idea.Does that make sense?
Of the ones you listed,I have no idea if any are of the same species, but I would check before you buy them. Msjinkzd can surely tell you what will and won't work together. Shoot her a PM.

That makes perfect since. Thank you. Thats why we do not see a community of different shrimp.:grinno:

Yeah, lol. But I'm pretty sure bamboo and red cherry shrimp are not the same species,so that should work. But check with someone who knows more about them then I do before you try it.

Blue [Pearl] shrimp will interbreed with Red Cherries. Bumblebees will interbreed with Tiger Shrimp.

Zebra shrimp, as far as I'm aware are Neocaridina, which will interbreed with both the blue pearls and red cherries. I'm not sure but I also think the zebra shrimp are Sulawesi? In which case if you have little to no shrimp experience, don't even plan on doing these ones for a while.

Take my advice, start with red cherries. These are the hardiest and easiest to breed of all the species of shrimp.

Check out this compatibility chart
http://www.theshrimpfarm.com/dwarf_shrimp_compatibility_chart.shtml

I'm new at this too, and this helped me. It seems accurate from what I've read elsewhere too. Not included on the chart, are the Malaya and Malawa shrimp, which seem to be a distinct species and do not interbreed with cherries, etc (?)

Also, for breeding, it seems like only high order shrimp are successfully bred in tanks-- the others seem to generally need brackish or salt water conditions for the larval stages, ultra tiny food, etc. So something else to consider...

GL! :)

edit: I just looked at google again and found another compatibility chart with even more shrimp species:

As a note, the bamboo shrimp I think are one of the species that require brackish water to breed, so you may wish to leave those out entirely if you're trying to breed them. Even among the neocaridinas, the asian species and indian species don't cross. If you're going to do bumblebee/CRS/CBS, remember that they like cooler water than the cherries do. Cherries are super easy to breed, just put some in an established planted tank and you can't stop them from multiplying :-)
