Hey,

Right now I have a 40 gallon tank with 3 yellow labs, 3 yoyo loaches, 3 giant danios, an opaline gourami, and a clown pleco. I was wondering if I got rid of the labs if a calvus would be okay with these fish. I hear they grow slowly, so these fish should have no problem attaining maturity before it is big enough to eat them right? I am so in love with the calvus. What are some tips on keeping them. I know they need really clean water, and I take good care of that. I can feed them ghost shrimp along with cichlid pellets. Other than that are they just like any other cichlid? What PH do they need? What would be a good aquascape. I have plenty of caves.

Well, if you have been successful keeping the yellow labs (I don't know how long you had the tank set up) you will likely be successful with calvus. Unless it is wild caught, then it is most important to keep tank conditions stable. If your pH is ok, then just leave it. By adding chemicals or other additives you are asking for problems.

How many calvus were you planning on adding? I am not familiar with most of the other fish you listed (I stick with African cichlids mostly), but calvus are not usually quite as aggressive or energetic as mbuna (like the yellow labs). Keep that in mind with your tank stock.

Overall it sounds like you know what you are doing and are willing to provide a good environment. One thing I would suggest is to feed a high quality pellet (NLS, omega one, hikari, etc. - I like NLS personally) as the main staple with snacks every now and then. Ghost shrimp should be fine.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I have a trio of labs with my comps and no problems at all, in fact the comps actually hold their ground.
