Came home from the long weekend to have my 5" male GT crispy about 4 feet away from the tank. He was from a local strain up here in MN and showed amazing colors from a very young age. Was going to set up a 75g just for him in the fall. I was slacking on getting glass tops for two reasons - summer and the tank he was in has an odd shape and there is a partial glued in glass top so I would have to go to a glass shop to get a custom top made - thus the major procrastination on my end.

The only up side I guess is that I don't have to buy a 75g and can put some geo. red head grow outs I have in a 20L into the tank right away. They're currently only around 2".

Last pic I have of the guy, have always wanted a nice big GT too - has kind of been the fish that I have always wanted to keep/have.

A few years back, my mom called me asking where my oscar (8 inches) was. She had been in my house for something. I came home, found him under the couch. Don't know whether he got under there on his own or the cat dragged him there. That taught to put covers on the tanks! Also up at mom's house, I did keep a 75 for a little while. My 6 inch leporinus jumped out and ended up at mom's bedroom door 20 feet away. She almost stepped on the poor thing. She was was not happy with me or my tank for quite some time afterword.

I posted in another thread about my JD that jumped out of a covered tank and woke me in the middle of the night thumping on the bottom of my dresser. I had to drain, by hand, his 29 gal. to get to him. He was covered in lint and carpet fibers and dry, but still gasping. I dropped him in another tank and in the mourning he was swimming like nothing ever happened. Some of our cichlids can last for hours out of water. Sorry your case did`nt work out like that.

Sorry for your loss. You can go buy the eggcrates from hardware stores and put 'em on top to prevent future jumpers. It's way cheaper than glass and easy to make it fit under different circumstances.

I dont understand how so many of you guys on here dont have lids lol. Lids obviously keep fish from jumping but besides that dont all your tanks evap?? I hate having low water level. Only gap I have is if there is a hang back, plus my temp is way more stable and heaters run way less.

Go to home depot and buy a piece of glass. The glass they have is easier to cut yourself than you would think.

In the summer it helps keep things cool and I do water changes twice a week (sometimes 3 times a week) so low water level isn't an issue. I do this many WC'ings not because of nitrates or anything, but because a quick WC without a sand/gravel vac takes 15ish minutes and my fish like it so might as well do it (that's my thought process at least).
