Came home from work today and found one of my red hooks with his tail ripped today. The piece that ripped turned red and is dangling. Should I cut off the loose piece, or leave it? I am going to treat with melafix, but I am pretty sure that the loose part is going to die anyway, so what to do...

Honestly, youll be fine either way. That tear isn't really into the flesh at all. Most on here will probably tell you to leave him alone and let it heal up. If your tank is healthy I wouldn't reccomend any meds at this point. Watch the fish and treat if any issues arrise. Less stress on the fish. Just keep an eye on him and all should be well.

something happen like that to one of my clown loach when i had to temporarily have it it in my jag tank for a day and it just healed up, took about 3weeks for a full new tail

Did you find out who the perpetrator is?

For something this minor, I really would not reccomend doing anything to affect your tank just yet. People are too quick to rush to meds around here. I see no reason why this fish would not recover on its own, provided it is not futher injured and water quality is good.

Yeah... stupidity. I'm pretty sure he wedged himself in a hole and freaked.
Nothing else in the tank is big enough to do that kind of damage.

You guys sure it will be ok?? Maybe the pics don't show it well enough, but the top spine of the tail is snapped off and it is hanging by the thin part. I'm wondering what is going to happen in a couple days when the dead part is starting to rot, and how it is going to grow back with that part still attached.
