I have 2 monos about a foot long. I thought that they were both males because it looked like they wre both getting a head bump. This morning the one with the smaller bump is laying eggs, dose that mean that the other is a male because it's bump is bigger? Can someone help? In the frist pic is of what i now belive to be the male. Can you tell? Thank you!

That looks like a rock solid female to me ;) And so the answer is yes ;) They get that from my own personal experience RIGHT before the eggs are layed ;)

Thank you, Is it common for monos to breed in tanks? This is now my 2nd pair, they do so much damage to their tank mates when they breed. The last pair killed a large oscar and made my gar jump out when I left the lid off.

Usually The male Knuckle is much larger.. BUT.. At 12" It could be that small...

Are they still spawning??? Watch the one that looks to be not laying eggs.. You will notice if you look close enough when HE if it is a he passes over .. You will notice his semen being discharged over the eggs...

Mine breed with a Black arow and a gar in the tank.

It is not yet common.. But becoming more and more common here ;) The trick is raising the fry :D

:iagree: That's why my male Mono is called Knuckle Head beacuse his Conk is huge and my females has sort of a small lump. But none of the other Cichla really have a conk at all.

So if the one that we think is a male is not discharging seman could it be a female or just not old enough yet? Thanks you guys have some great info!!

Pairs have been seen to be successful at 12" in the past ;) Best way in my opinion is to look at the vents.. They should both be out right now.. And If they are you can definitely tell if they are different.. And the semen is hard to see.. But you can see it if you are looking .. As he passes over watch his vent.. small smokey looking cloud.. Almost not noticeable .

looks to me to be a female... any pictures of the back to fins.. if the other one in the first picture drops a tube then shes 100% a female.. take a peep at her vent, there is a thread here that shows you what to look for... also nice wild monos you have there by the way.
