i am currently running my 65g FW tank and am thinking about converting it to salt, but im wondering if i can keep my rena canister filter running until i sell all my fish then when i sell my last FW fish, quickly convert my tank into SW by removing all the water and gravel substrate and adding in sand, live rock and new salt water and then starting my filter. as soon as i can when the sand settles. i can test the water the same day and see what the parameteres are, if everything is good after a few days i can just fish...any thoughts on this? i was thinking about putting an airstone into my filter to keep it going when it was off so the bacteria will stay alive.

darn, thats exactly what i was hoping i wouldn't hear. do you guys think that it could do any harm if i tried it anyway

When we refer to cycling a tank it's the measurements of change in harmful gases to unharmful ( Ammonia to nitrite to nitrate to nitrogen) along this cycle a countless number of bacteria is involved and I do mean countless, it is yet unknown how many strains actually exsist. Each type involved is pretty much A-specific to it's individual enviorment.
It is highly doudtful freshwater bacteria survives saltwater for any length of time yet there are those who do claim they've done exactly what you'd like.

Just remember - your gonna get out of this what you put in - taking the right steps slowly is the way to go.

doubt it will survive, but look at it this way,the die off from the filter will cause an ammonia spike that will start the SW cycle. if there is enough die off you might not need to add a dead frozen shrimp or bottled ammonia

Wow that's true, I thought about that and that would be really awesome. I have a pretty big canister filter and I'm thinking that it's possible that my filter has enough bacteria to cycle my tank. If not it's a good automatic start. I plan on taking it slow for sure though and I'm not gonna rush anything, salt water fish can get pretty expensive and I would never want to throw any fish not 100% sure they can survive.
It's time to get a SW test kit and start out the cycling

you know it, thats why i've only had a pair of clowns in my 26g since january and i when slow when adding shrimp and now my sifting goby.

just take your time because good things take time
