Can a pond filter be used for an aquarium???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure why not I see no harm in using a strong arse filter for a tank. Though I would like to use a wet/dry instead of a pond filter, you could just build your wet/dry larger than what ur tank needs incase of an upgrade, then ur wet/dry would be big enough.

Thanks for the response.

I just like how canister / pressurized pond filters look - everything in one can.

Any suggestions as to which brand, model, etc? What are the pros and cons vs using a regular "for aquarium" canister filter like the eheim 2262?

Just make sure it is one with a backwash option (like the Ultima IIs). This will make water changes and filter cleaning super simple.

Would a pond filter require an external pump? Aren't they built like the regular aquarium canister filters that have the pumps built in?

The type I am going to assume you are asking about are called "pressurised pond filters" and I haven't seen one with a pump built in. From the research I did a while back you will be cheaper buying a sump, plumbing and pump.
Pressurised pond canisters aren't that cheap, they are large but you have the added expense of buying and running an external pump.

searched for pond filters and chanced upon this thread.

for my new 180G [6x2x2] which is going to house my 14" Banjar Red Aro, 6" Florida Gar, Three 10-12" Ornate Bichirs, 8" Endii, Two 7" Senegals and 9 Clown Loaches of varying sizes and a Bristlenose pleco, been looking at Claritec 3000 and a ViaAqua pump.

like OP said, a canister just looks better and well wanted to know your thoughts on the combo

thanks
