Can a refugium and wet/dry filter work for freshwater?

I know they are highly regarded when filtering salt water, but can they be used for freshwater?

Yes they can, although in fresh water usage the refugium is usually filled with a plethora of plants that filter out nitrates. I use 20, 30 and 40 gal tanks as "refugiums" for my larger cichlid tanks, where the cichlids would normally destroy the plants.

There are also invertebrates such snails, gammarus and sometimes cichlid fry in mine.
