I was always wondering this, can sponge filters be your only means of filtration and be it's only source of filtration? I'm wondering this because i may need more room and i have my buddies 50g tank here with a heater but no filters but i do have two sponge filters a large hydor v and a medium one with two air pumps ones rated for 100g and ones rated for 80g. And i could possibly get more and each pump has two ports so thats potentially 4 sponge filters now will this be enough? i have two stocks that could go in, either two p bass in the 50 or they could go in my 29g for a tad before they get bigger. or my stock thats in the 29 which is two small festae tire track eel proteus pike and 4 cory cats. Would the sponge filters be able to support for either stock? yes the tanks are GROW OUTS, i know the potential sizes of all the fish. Thanks

Yes, many people run only sponges on tank. Especially breeders as they make much more economical sense on larger scale operations. They are capable of handling some decent bioload as well.

It would certainly work, but with them as your only filtration you will need to keep them clean so they don't clog. And make sure you vac the bottom regularly to make up for the lack of mechanical filtration.

Thanks guys, yea if i do go through with it, it would get 2 w/c a week and i gravel vac everytime like with all my tanks. I do have an aquaclear mini filter i could toss on as well, ut again i brought this up just because its the stuff i have available and would not need to buy anything if it could work. Thanks everyone.

Some people swear by them! Old school hobbyists mostly. The size of the fish you're keeping should be factored in as well.
Imo the extra noise from the bubbles and air pumps is a big turn off, but once you witness an entire fishroom running on a single pump their usefulness cannot be denied. I like to run them as prefilters for my powerheads(kinda defeats the purpose gets the job done).

Absolutely, it works. I have 4 tanks set up that way.
