I have a 125 that i just got. ive been thinking of placing my 55g under neath it and have my xp2 on it. i read the booklet and they want a min of 2' from the canister to the water level. why is that? i would think as long as the water level is above the canister it would be fine. what do you think?

thanks

It doesn't work too well, I've tried it (XP1 on a bottom shelf tank.) The filter was a real b***h to prime and keep primed. Canister filters really need to be under a tank to be able to utilize gravity and keep them pumping right.

:iagree:

A proper stand will look better too.

Canisters are gravity fed, so by not having enough differential between the water level and the canister will starve the pump of the water it needs. Picture 2 gallons of water going into the canister, but the canister pumping out 4. You have to have enough water going to the filter to keep it functioning properly.

Yeah, canisters at the same level as the water do not work too well. I had a 55g on the basement floor as a temporary q-tank w/a Magnum 350 and it didn't work too well.
