About a year ago I got a pair of WC Lenticulatas pretty sure I have male (14" or so) and a female (10" or so) but unsure. They have paired up, and are almost joined at the hip if you know what I mean! I have tried adding 4 good size fish, they killed them, I did large water changes and put cooler water in, stopped feeding them for a while and did a large feeding, then another large water change. Still nothing, can anyone help? I have spawned other "hard to spawn" fish such as mono Pbass, so why are these fish so hard to spawn? If you want I can post pictures later so maybe you all can tell the sex by looking at them.

Post pics :)

What is your pH at? I tried for almost a year to spawn them, they were bonded really well (both between 12-13") and killed off five other Lents of similar size before she decided to off the male. I know that my female had been a spawner in the wild, it was really obvious from venting. . . if you catch my drift. I could never get the pH down enough, that is my theory on a trigger to get them started.

The PH ranges from 7.6-6.8 in between water changes, I do water changes once a week about 50%. Here are the pikes! I couldn't get good pictures with wood and stuff in the tank so I took it out, the fish were pretty pist but after a while they cooled down. So they might look a bit mad.

well if its lowering the pH...then cant u add something to bring it down? no experience at all lol just my 2 cents

Nice lents. I enjoyed that second to the last pic - he/she truly did not enjoy you rearranging the furniture.

I'm kind of in the same boat, so interested in the info you get. I have the sp Rio Atabapo. I'm introducing almond leaves and peat, slowly increasing the amount after each water change.

Thanks that is the one I think is male, less color and much bigger. So how low are you trying to go? How yellow dose the peat and almond leaves turn you water? Where do I get peat at? My LFS dosen't sell it. Almond leaves, leaves from an almond tree? Where do you get those? Thank you

Very nice pikes!!!

First let me say that you are trying to spawn a fish that is going to be nearly impossible. There will be an occational person that has some success with these types of fish but it is very seldom. You are also not going to have a chance to spawn them in that tap water. You need to be somewhere between 5.5-6.0 to even have a chance and it needs to be stable conditions. Not fluctuating by 0.8. Peat and almond leaves are not going to accomplish this. You are going to have to go RO first and then use something to lower more from there. They are just a fish that even the best aquariumist are not going to breed without a ton of work and a lot of luck.

More luck than work. I had a group of four, then a pair for 2 1/2 years. No luck & nearly perfect conditions. One day people will breed them & break the code. I`ve seen many people claim to be the one. None of them succeeded. I don`t believe that it`ll take a perfect, ideal situation. It`ll be the right pair @ the right time. Stable conditions & no not 5.0 ph neither. I`ve been away from breeding pikes for about 3-4 years, but I`m about to take the plunge again with marmorata, lenticulata, & some lepidota. I wish you well . later...Keith

Ok, Thanks for all the info, I only wanted to breed them because I got them to live together with out killing each other. If they wont spawn, Maybe I'll put them in my 400gal and take them out of the 125gal. Do you think that they would kill polypterus?
