And perhaps a firemouth cichlid as well. I really wanted a small school of bottom feeders in the 55 gallon with them. I like the sharks - I'm guessing some of these can live with the cichlids, no?

Another question, I'm confused about these things... "dither fish". How come they don't get eaten? I'm guessing if I tried a school of croaking gourami with my convict and/or firemouth, they'd become snacks... right? I honestly don't even know if they are compatible, it was just an example off the top of my head (but if they are, let me know hehe). Ummm... that's it for now, I guess. Any help? =)

Agreed, clown loaches get too big for a 55. Try some yoyos, polka dots, zebras, or other smaller Botia in a group of AT LEAST 6.
As far as dithers, you want something big enough not to be considered food, fast moving, and not easily stressed. Larger tetras, barbs, and others could work.

I use tin foil barbs, any kind of barb actually. The are quick and can be aggressive if necessary. As for loaches, I would go with clown loaches, But understand that you will need to give them a bigger home. I have 3 in a 55 and the have been in there for 6 months. They don't grow very fast. I also have red finned botias and tiger loaches in with my 6-10" cichlids. They do just fine. The tigers (i believe some call them Blythe loaches) are very aggressive and will torment smaller fish. These are not for the beginner.

Here is a pic of one of mine.

I love my clowns, but smaller loaches get no respect! :D

My polka-dots (Botia kubotai) are just as entertaining and stay small. :)
