I know there small only 3 inch but I thought I would see if any one can give direction. Here is two different ones the one with no horizontal line is the most dominant. The second is the one with the most copper in the cheeks

Still a bit to young to tell.

Ya I know any answer I get will more or less just be a guess right. I don't really think that mirror test is accurate, and they grow so slow when you look at.them every day lol.

The mirror test is very inaccurate for determining sex. And that one is way too small to tell bro. Give it a couple more months

Way too young.

Sexing young umbee's is hard especially how there are a lot more female umbee's than males.
Give it more time.

Though, I can sex managuenses, dovii's, festae's, red devils, and ect at 1-2 inches but umbee's are much harder.

^^^ ROFL you can sex festae and red devils at 1-2"???? Give me a break!!! I don't know anyone that can sex them 100% at that size.. and ill congratulate the **** out of anyone who can sex an umbee under 3" Lol. There are plenty of umbees that can't even be sexed at 8" let alone 1-2":)

No joke, usually the largest ones are males. It's not hard, I'm not 100% right all the time but I can tell you I am 75% right most of the time lol.
Yeah and umbee's are easily the hardest to sex, I don't think I know anybody who can sex an umbee at 1 inches!!

Hey Freshwater P, you seem to really know your stuff when it comes to pairs of fish, I have a question, can it sometimes take really long for a pair to bond? My Dovii have been together for about three months and they have spawn three times and she has eaten the eggs all three times, and she spends 80% of her time in her divider only to come out and court just before she lays it seems. The last spawn he took over the nest and wouldn't let her near them and nearly killed her, the eggs.were brown for 3 days, on the third morning I open the light and she was near the nest and the eggs were gone. Dumb #$&@+ I'm thinking they will never.bond?

Give it some time. Sometimes cichlids will take a few times before they get it right. It can take some time for the pair to bond. Most of the times the males are to rough for the females. Which will force the female to hide most of the time. To play it safe, I would use the divider method. Thats the best way that you can protect your female. They can still see each other without the male going crazy and doing damage to the female. I am currently in the process of pairing up my umbees. Its been 3 weeks already and now they seem to hit it off. First 2 weeks for me were hit or miss. I would take the divider out of the tank and they would swim together and do their courtship rituals but then the male would get to rough and I end up putting the divider back in. Now I have the divider out again and they are both digging and cleaning out a potential spawn site in their tank.
