I have this jack dempsey and it has alot of blue and color. i heard you cant tell unless you breed them and see the outcome of the fry but i wasnt sure to believe it. any help would be much appreciated.

That is one nice looking Dempsey. But as far as being a blue gene there are no physical characteristics to show that he is carrying the gene. It's like saying you're carrying the gene for blue eyes. Your eyes won't be any more blue.

thanks guys i didnt know for sure he seemed to just be more prettier then any other normal jacks ive seen well not all but most so i didnt know if he was displaying it or not. and i am working on breeding him i had a female i threw him in with but shes half the size but they keep by each other and she has turned really black on her belly but it goes away sometimes. so hoping it happens soon.

nice jd . i've heard jds with alot of blue and green spangles carry the blue gene. as for how true it is idk. i agree with breeding it to a known blue geen or ebjd and see what type of fry you get.

Most BG's tend to look better because breeders take better care of them. IMO, the only way to tell a BG from a really pretty regular JD is through the breeder. Pacificshrimps from aquabid is the only person I have seen sell BG's that tend to resemble EBJD's.

How'd you get him. I have a breeding pair but they're both at about 6 inches and I've only had one successful batch from three spawns (my fault, I'm a breeding newb). When you think they're close to breeding do frequent water changes, feed them high quality , and make sure they have a place for a nest.

a local fish store my friend works at. he didnt know where it came from because he wasnt working when it came in. i got a steal on it because the owner labled it on a fishtank and moved him to another where a jack had been. so my friend went from that price and gave me my 20% discount so i dont want to ask the owner haha. i appreciate the advice!!
