Can anyone answer this question on the Hobbit movies?

I'm thinking about going to watch the second Hobbit movie tomorrow, but I have not seen the first. Will I be confused watching the second if I haven't seen the first?

you will be missing huge amounts of the plot

since they decided to turn this into an unnecessary trilogy, they really take their time on clarifying things and building the plots.

you really should see the first one first. you're not gonna know any of the characters

if you haven't read about the first movie's plot or anything then you're not gonna know who anyone is or what they're doing

you're just gonna know a couple of elves and Gandalf, lol.

I read an article online that disagrees with you.... Lol. But, I'm gonna go see if I can find the first one at Red Box and watch it tonight. My wife wont be able to watch the first one if I rent it, so hopefully she won't be too in the dark. I can at least explain it to her.
