my midas/RD is generally timid. he's definately not a glass banger and even gets scared and darts off if you come too close. he'll only acknowledge me if he sees me reaching for the food to feed him.

BUT...... whenever stick my hand in (vacuum the tank), he'll attack at no end, AND when i turn on the aquarium light at night, he gets posessed and does flares his gills swimming from end to end, attacking the glass.

like the title says, can anyone explain this or have similar experience?

I got you beat... When my Pacu was 6" I put him in a larger tank, he swam around at a 45 degee angle for two days (either side)! I thought he was sick :nilly:. So I put him back in his old tank and everything was fine :screwy:. I started thinking about it, got an idea and painted the sides and bottom of the new tank black and brown. Put him back in it and no problem :headbang2. Turns out he was just looking thru the bottom glass and couldn't figure it out .

Vacuum the tank more often so he gets used to you invading his space :D. You've given him no choice but to try and chase to off, your too close and he can't hide. Just instinct.

When you turn on the light, it creates a mirror like reflection on the inside of the glass; now seeing another fish (same sex too) he tries to chase it off. :nilly:

Dim the light at night or make your room lights brighter to lessen the effect. It could be tiring/frustrating to him or could give him added exercise (watch for stress).

My RD is extremely timid when it comes to people being around his tank. He'll smash himself into the sides of the glass when startled (sometimes I think he is a reincarnated Iridescent Shark).

But when I clean the tank or put my hands in he is fearless, and swims by my hand/vacuum like nothing. He will even attack a net if it is too close to him.

I gave him a large cave to hide in and loaded his tank with places to swim under. It helped some, but he still is a spaz.

I'd thought about that as well and did the whole "mirror" test on him and instead of fighting his own mirrored reflection, he would freeze and all his fins would raise up like he was startled or alert, like a dog raising his ears and tail.

i guess thats why they are animals, can't explain ALL thier behaviors.

and thanks for sharing these stories...
