Could anyone give me the scientific name for the monster 1 min. into this video. This is one of favorite episodes from this series right behind open water and the cave episode. Always wanted to know what this guy was.

Thanks

Not sure if I embedded the video correctly, though I followed the directions to a t.

indeed I failed with the embedding. If you put your cursor on the box and click where the underline comes up, the video will show.

Are you talking about the dorado?

Golden Dorado, Salminus brasiliensis

NIce video. YEs that is correct Golden dorado. Nice fish and a mean appetite

Salminus brasiliensis or Salminus Maxillosus

I have had a bunch of predatory fish over the years.... And these things are probobly the most impressive I have ever owned.... VERY strong, powerfull, tough, hungry, and NOT very considerate of other fish in the tank.

thank you, and thank you for correctly posting the video (not sure what I'm doing wrong with that).

I thought it was a dorado, but a while back when I googled it, that mahi mahi fish kept coming up, same family I guess and I wasn't being specific enough.

Thanks again.

They're in completely different families. Mahi mahi are nicknamed Dorado because of the golden color they change to when they're excited. I actually got to watch some during feeding time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (Mahi mahi, not dorado), it was amazing!

But yeah, dorados have some nasty attitudes.

fresh water dorado's scientific name is Salminus Maxsillosus and Salminus Brasiliensis. Both have same shape but different colors. But from what I've seen and read there may be 3-4 variants.

so you weren't looking for a wolfish after all...

When did anyone say anything about a wolf fish?

This thread stemmed from a thread in the "Other Monster Fish" section.... The O.P. asked for ID on a wolf. We ID'd and it turns out they were thinking Dorado, not wolf.

Someone cried wolf???? :ROFL::ROFL:
