Can anyone guide me on identifying payara?

With out a pic it's impossible for us to make an id for you. You can check out the id thread in the characin section and try to determine it yourself. If it is a true red tail payara it is Tat and in my opinion worth the $100.

Agreed,if it is labeled as a red tail payara then chances are that that is what it is.At least they didn't label it as a vampire tetra,hate that vague pet store term.Like Kolstix already advised,check out the thread in the other characins section and familiarize yourself with pictures of true tats and other payara,that way you will know just what the stores have.
 
I have seen them a little cheaper than that but not recently.That's about what they are going for now.I had a trio and I payed that much for them a few years ago.

krichardson is right that's about the going price for them. You'll some times see them cheaper, but it usually just means the seller doesn't know what he has. As for being the rarest I still think it's Armatus that are the rarest of the Hydrolycus.
