Bought this fish a few months ago with some others that were being sold as Blue Acaras. I was told it would be non-agressive but it killed its tankmates and has been agressive towards any cichlid we try to put it with (excluding our angelfish). It also ate a few hatchetfish :( Other people I've asked said it might be a Green Terror or a Threadfin Acara. I just want a positive ID so I know if I can house it properly and if it's going to be compatible with new fish. I appreciate any help.

Thank you! Do you have any personal experience with keeping them? Mine is pretty agressive but mostly to other cichlids. Are there any types I should avoid?

Although the Geophagus braziliensus group are not the most aggressive group of cichlids, it has probably decided that the entire tank is its territory, so anything you put in that is, or looks like a normal cichlid, may be treated as an interloper and a threat.
They come from southern Brazil, and can take, and may be less aggressive in cooler water (high 60s, low 70sF).
It will eat any fish it can swallow, some from this group, can attain a size of 12".

I have an 8" iporangensis that is an absolute jerk. Attacks are usually nonphysical but can be relentless. My larger severum and bellycrawler will stand him down, definitely wouldn't mix with anything less aggressive or smaller than that. Although he ignores my heckellii.

Hete is my iporangensis which is basically a smaller brasiliensis.
