Hey gang,

Just got back from California and went to the CA of Sciences Aquarium. If you've never been there, it's a great time. I saw this fish in with a paratilapia polleni along with some other smaller "drab" cichlids, all being labeled as being from "Madagascar"...but this fish didn't have a label or scientific (latin) name. Any ideas gang? They were very colorful and peaceful from what I could tell...they actually looked like a saltwater fish to me! I'm interested in keeping these if possible!

Ryan.

Anybody know where I can get one or a few? I see they are listed as endangered?

Daves Rare fish has them on his list, $25 each for 2"-4", $65 for larger ones.
If you get some, they prefer to live in groups of 4 or more, and the groups have a fragile hierarchy, take one out for a short time, try to reintroduce, it may be killed, you will need a large tank.
Mine easily reached 14", and spawned many times, but was never able to get fry.
They are snail eaters in nature, and prefer warm temps, in the low 80s. Some were available at the ACA convention last summer.

I now keep their close cousin, P maculatus, they easily spawn, bit similar to menerambo, getting fry has been problematic. They tend to eat the eggs almost immediately.
