I bought this at WM for under $2. :shakehead No one knew what it was. I would really like to know if its a type of spiny eel or something else. It doesn't have a "sharp looking nose" like all the other photos of the spinys I've seen. It's nose like elongated but sort of blunt at the end. It stays mostly at the bottom but does venture to the top on occassion. It tries to stick it's head in the roots of my amazon sword and mostly hides under a small piece of driftwood. It's only a 10gal right now until my 30 is ready. It's tank mates are 4 tetras and 1 pleco. I drop bloodworms, tubiflex worms and dried baby shrimp into the tank but I've yet to witness this thing eat. Hence the reason for knowing if its a carnivore or herbivore:help2:

thanks in advance for your help!

It is a Macrognathus sp. they are bottom borrowing fish use small gravel or sand feed at night with sinking pellets, ghostshrimp, and guppys. the are a the fish store label as spiny eels good luck

also for long term heath black worms area must

thanks! I figured it was some sort of spiny eel but since there's 400 or so species of them, I had no clue where to start looking. I did buy some shrimp pellets yesterday and tubiflex worm cubes yesterday. I am hoping to see it eating something so I dont worry so much about it. I also hope it's nose is supposed to look like that and it's not injured. I did notice that most of the spiny eels photos I've seen they have a really pointed snout, almost spine-like. Wish me luck!!

it looks like the zig zag (Macrognathus armatus) but I am not sure 100%

And the pointy nose is cause it is a burrowing fish :)

of all the ones i saw I was thinking either that or a tire track but I dont think there's anyway to be sure. They didn't have a tag on the tank at WM.

Thanks John for the welcome!!!!
