Can Anyone ID this Synodontis??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Synodontis ocellifer
common name: Ocellated synodontis, that is what it looks like to me

I'd say hybrid :)

yeah because i've had a pure syno. ocellifer before (he was my favorite catfish i've ever had!) He grew to be almost a foot long! I raised him all the way from when he was just 1.5 inches and he lived for over 10 years. I miss that catfish (I named him frank), and i would love to have another ocellifer now...but the ones i got just dont look exactly like my ocellifer did. Its very close, but there are some minor differences i can see. If its probably a hybrid, any idea what it is a mix of? ocellifer crossed with feather fin possibly? I have no idea

Hard to see - too dark. Looks like a hybrid to me too, perhaps the most common one they call valentine syno or jaguar syno etc. -
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=602 no one knows their parent lineage for sure, at least I've never met such info, only guesses which abound.

Browse other hybrid synos and see what matches the best, here is the whole genus:

I find this thread on hybrid synos highly informative and you may see good pics there too: http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=28659

these two were labeled at my LFS as just "synodontis catfish" so not very helpful...i bought them anyway to go in my 125 malawi tank but i'd sure like to know exactly what species they are!
Thanks! and here is a video link to see the catfish...
