Can anyone sex EBJD?

I would like to know what my ebjd is . I just thought most ebjd were male so I just call mine a male. Then I started to think. Since the normal jd the female has the blue gill plate and the males only a little blue... Well I see some ebjd photo were some gill plates being solid and others have less blue.

I think to go by how pointy fins are is not 100%.

So does any one maybe a breeder know how to sex these fish? Any one have a proven female and could post a photo?

Having raised and bred a few Blue females...

...I do not know of any specific traits I would suggest looking for...


The reliable way to sex Blue Dempseys is to wait until they are sexually mature and observe their behavior when placed in a tank with a mature Dempsey of known sex.


I've had Blue females with MUCH pointier fins than some of my Blue males... I've had females with trailers longer than some of my Blue males... I've seen absolutely no signs of the quantity nor quality of Blue to indicate gender in Blue Dempseys...


If you search this forum you will find many pictures of many of my Blues, including females in both breeding and non breeding colors...
