Last week I bought an alligator gar and put it in my 200 Lt tank, and my cichlids killed it, thats so sad, I feel horrible... can anyone tell me why that happened?

Here are some details:

the gar was about 10 cm , and my cichlids are about the same size, the kind of cichlids I have are a Red Parrot, Green Terror, Buttikoferi, Bumblee Bee, Black Shark, a young Giant Gourami and 3 plecos.

never keep gar with cichlids. cichlids are to aggressive. the only cichlids that may work (atleast for me) are oscars. do if choose to buy another gar provide a seperate tank.

are you serious
i am sorry, but with that combination there are so many things that are wrong
* the tank is over crowded
* those are some evil chiclids you are keeping, which are not good to keep with gars
* the tank is too small to even house the GT,or the GG for life let alone all those fish
* you have 3 plecos how big are those and what kind of filteration do you have on your tank
* for an alligator gar the tank is too small as the gar would have outgrown your tank in a very short span
please do some research before you buy your next fish, then you will have happy fish and you will enjoy your fish for a long time to come
good luck

^ simply put.

thanks for the posts, im planning to get a bigger tank for my giant gourami and of course someday I will buy an alligator gar without cichlids

better have a pond/pool ready for it. cuz when they get big enough they cannot live in a tank. but if they do the tank will have to be HUGE. gator gars get to 5'+ in captivity.

i think i need to take a break from the gar fourm fo a bit....i'll be waiting for something worth posting about. i really enjoy helping people, but the level of stupidity in this forum lately is off the charts. it seems to come in waves...

anyway...what happened to your gar!?! uhhh...it got killed due to your ignorance.

:iagree: Cichlids should not be overcrowded with a gar.

I'd guess the culprit was the butti, but could be the BP or black shark.
