I was wondering, i've seen people use mangrove, for salt
i've kept bamboo in a jar with rocks and tap water for a year now
seems to be doing well
would it work to stick some of the good luck bamboo in a large tank in front of a window? Besides my fish needing luck lately and all that
it seems it would do ok in low light and perhaps scavenge some organics as well as provide hiding spaces?

I have bamboo in my loach tank, I have no idea if it does anything for nitrates.

Check the species of bamboos before using them. Some of them are like weed. They are capable of taking over the entire tank by itself. Also, once you get them -- it is impossible to get rid of them. The only way you can get rid of a bamboo infestion is get rid of the substrate and sterlize the tank.

Just a couple of second-hand horror stories that I heard that I think you might want to consider.

I am not sure if any of this is true, but it better to be safe than sorry by doing further research right?

Don't quote me.. But I think the amount of plants period would have to be allot to do any significant damage to your nitrates...

Yes or No ?? Wyldfya..

bamboo, or lucky bamboo can't survive under water.

They do best submerged 30% and will tolerate up to 75% for more then a year.
I tried a dozen in a large tank and seen no significant improvement in nitrate reduction and the rate of growth from the roots didn't change that much from normal .
I moved them to a planted tank a lot smaller 55g and they did quite well no rotting and my tank had zero readings for half a year(was almost zero before the bamboo) before i changed to a bare tank.
The up side is it made for great cover for my Gouramis and looked really sharp in the tank with no ill effects the trick is to find some tall plants 24" with well developed leaves and have at least 25% out of the tank.
Do a search i have a thread somewhere.

If some of the plant is emersed bamboo will do well, but completely submerged bamboo will rot and die.
