Can Bichir Eat Too Much and Die?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IME (which covers upper and lower jaw species) they wont gorge to the point of harming themselves.

Mine will eat until they are fat, then just stop. This allows me to serve just enough so that a few pieces of shrimp are left over and my royal can go chow down without the bichirs trying to take it's food.

Bloat is an internal bacterial infection (aka dropsy) that is treatable with meds from your LFS. If your fish continues to eat while infected, it can die because of the buildup of fluids inside of it that don't get excreted, thus the body being swollen.

Even if it stops eating, it could die. I've used Maracyn2 to treat it with success.
