Can Bichirs Go Well with a Peacock Bass??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Only problem I see would be feeding. Eating habits of those 2 are like opposite side of a coin. Peacock bass goings into feeding frenzy during feeding time while with bichir, they take sometime before they realise that food has been served. So as long as they are of appropriate size and you can ensure the bichir can get to the food, it is doable.

At 2-3" the bass may try to eat the bichirs. They also grow a lot faster than the bichirs, so it won't be long before they will definitely will eat the bichirs.
Im sure that the Bichirs are Abit bigger thn the Pbass. So Is it worth trying?

The growth rate is just too different. In a year the peacock will(or should be) over a foot. The bichirs will probably be 8 inches or less. With that size difference and the peacock's appetite the bichirs would be toast.

We have kept our pbass with a bichir or two their entire lives. We have had NO problems with this combo at all. We feed our pbass cut foods and when they're hungry they'll eat what they want before it gets anywhere near the bottom. When they're full the pbass just let the food sink to the bottom...that's where the bichir comes in. On feeding days we always make sure that there is enough food on the bottom of the tank for the bichir. Then we shut the lights off and he comes out and eats. It really has been a good arrangement and adds diversity to the tank. Just make sure that they're appropriately sized... also, growth rate is gonna depend on species... our congicus has grown SUPER fast compared to the other bichirs we've had.
