I was dumb enough to add 2 otocinclus to the tank and my 8-9" delhezi ate them in 3 days. This got me thinking....are they agile enough to hunt down guppies? Mine is pellet train:confused:ed but I'm willing to feed it guppies once in awhile.

Yes easily. The bigger the poly gets the easier they get them, atleast in my case lol

Kept mine with about 9 guppies for 2 weeks. Didn't touch any for a week, then they started disappearing atleast one per day lol While still eating sinking pellets, shrimp pellets, and even some flake.

Considering how clumbsy most polypterus seem, they are very agile, and very adept at catching fish!

Becuase of this, we were all surprised when Anne posted a chart showing the contents discovered in a range of polypterus that was absent of fish! I believe crab made up the bulk of their diet. Oh, and a bird leg.

I feed my bichirs guppies every other day. I just put around 25 guppies in my bichir tank. (with 8 bichirs and a royal knife inside) After 30 mins or so, I could hardly see any guppies left. I sit around and just enjoy the show... :)

Hello,

especially P.delhezi are effective and fast predators ... and they are creatures of the night! By night they will hunt and catch every fish they are able to eat (Ornates are more crazy and will kill fish you wouls not think they could do! They'll do it in shark-style - heavy head-banging and so on ...). Mine ate several tank communities of "common" aquaristic fish like Neons, Guppies and even Angel fish that i got from keepers without any further interest in aquaristics ... and also cichlids - but thats another story.

This is a great thread. I've been trying to decide what feeders to breed and, from the sound of it, guppies seem a good choice.

If you have to feed live, make sure you go through a QT regiment on your feeders.

When I used to feed live, I always have a 10 gallon tank running..I would put 100 -150 guppies in there, feed them, treat them with prazipro to get rid of any parasites. Out of 100, 20-30 may died within 3-4 weeks. After that time, I move them to 20 gallon which is their permanent death row ;( i feed 10-15 guppies per day).

I fill up the 10 gallon with 100-150 guppies again and th epriocess continues..by the time the death row tank is almost empty, the new batch will be QT'ed.
