I recently introduced my channel catfish into my koi pond which is approximately 3 feet deep, i am wondering if this would suffice him for the winter.

during the winter enough to freeze the pond for a few weeks between jan and feb, not enough to freeze it solid, let alone few feet.

depends on the dept. they can IF your pond is deep enough

in pa there is a pond near by with channel cats. not sure how deep it is but i dont think it is that deep and i ahve caught a 20inch cat in it

If your water temp drops below 30 degree's Id say unlikely. I would put some sort of deicer on the top to keep it from freezing completely over but I would think the channel could handle into the low 40's water temp wise based on them surviving in lubbock, texas playa lakes that get that cold ~Trent

It can survive if you have a way of keeping a hole open for all the bad gasses that build up to escape through. A de-icer of sorts would be a great solution. Or you boil some water and melt a hole. Your choice.

Water isn't water below 32 degrees. I'll promise you if the fish hits 30 degrees it's dead.

I wouldn't put chemicals in your pond but a simple aerator will keep your pond from freezing over in all but the coldest days.

Sorry I meant to clarify on the de icer, they have little pump things I've seen at the local pond store that sit on the top and give off heat around them to keep a hole open at the top of the pond.

water...ice...its all the same frozen or not ;)
