Hi,
Random question, but I was wondering if Cichlids have a sense of smell - at feeding time do they locate the food purely by vision and water vibrations, or can they actually smell it?

Thanks

If you really want to know how cichlids communicate thru color, smell, and even that they make sounds, get the book by George Barlow, "The Cichlid Fishes, Natures Grand Experiment in Evolution".
The paperback versions available for only @ $12.

I have a two tank system and when I feed one tank the fish in the second tank cannot see me at all but they go crazy about 15 to 20 seconds after the food is put in the other tank. It's just electric blue acara but still cichlids. I am sure they smell it.

yes they can and they can hear your voice also.
by SENSE :)

All keen fish keepers that want to write books and such shall agree.
