can Discus survive at a Ph level of 10

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that is on the high side might need an ro unit but to learn about discus go to simplydiscus the forum is very good

No, i would not put discus in a pH so high. a pH of 10 is extremely high and I doubt any fish could live in it. This probably also explains why your discus died not too long ago. Given the extremely high pH, any trace of ammonia would be almost 100% in its un-ionized form which would also kill a fish.

discus like a ph of 6. i don't think any fish available to the aquatic hobby could survive in a ph of 10. not even cichlids from lake tanganyika(spelling). how could you even drink that? it would make you sick, and possibly damage your stomach. drinking water is supposed to have a ph of around 7.

Acidosis/Alkalosis
Symptoms:
Slimy skin (milky and cloudy), bleeding sores, thick cloudy coatings on the eyes, brownish coating on the gills, fish may dart and jump around the aquarium, jerky movements.

Causes:
Acidosis: Very low pH and hardness levels usually associated with pH swings.

Alkalosis: Fluctuation of pH and hardness level.

Treatment:
Acidosis: Check pH and carbonate hardness. Increase the pH and stabilize the carbonate hardness using baking soda, crushed corals, etc.

Alkalosis: Reduce the pH and hardness levels with the use of reverse-osmosis (RO) water and tannic acids by peat or driftwood.

this makes me laugh. Standard procedure for breeding N. Brevis or most shelldwellers (neolamprologus) involves raising the pH between 9.6 and 9.8. That's beside the point though.

No, you will kill your fish. Captive bred discus have a lot more versatile osmoregulatory system than most people give them credit for, but not that good. An RO filter will work, but with a high pH you probably have realllly hard water. IE, you will be going through membranes (not cheap) every few months. In this case it might be cheaper in the long run for you to buy it from a petstore (let them blow through their RO membranes)

could you put the water in a holding tank full off driftwood for a week to lower the ph
