??? My water is still a tint of brown from my mastake of not soaking some driftwood I bought but would it cause HITH on my firemouths and oscar? I do 30 - 35 gallon water changes every other day to try to make my water clear agian so I think that eliminates horrible water quality.

Bump.

the tanning shouldnt do anything really bad, just lower pH naturally. i've never had any problems

I doubt it.

HITH takes a while to develop and tannins from drift wood have never been attributed to it that i know of.

Poor filtration, boring diet and poor water conditions are what cause it.

Check all those things.

- You should be filtering 5X the volume of your tank per hour if you have a canister.
If you dont have a canister, you should be turning over 10X the volume per hour.

- Nitrates shouldnt be over 80 for long periods of time.

- Diet should consist of a variety of foods and not just pellets. A boring diet is one of the main causes of HITH in Oscars. As treatment and maintenance, i would add some sort of Vitamin supplement to the diet like Vita-Chem. Variety should include veggies, meaty foods, insects, krill, worms etc.

I feed him. Frozen blood worms, freeze dried shrimp. oscar grow, Hakari Cichlid Gold, Hakari Cichlid Staple Food, like twice a month I throw a guppy in there. What else can I feed him? I have a Fluval Fx5. And Nitrates are below 20.

But he shows all the signs of HITH, kind of. I can see a bunch of his censory pits and he has 2 holes on his chin. He always gets the two on his chin before it breaks out all over his forehead. But he is still eating like a pig and swimming around and exploring like normal.

I have also heard the HITH is caused by electromagnetic waves or something beyond our control as well as the conditions already listed. A little salt, some General cure, and a few more degrees might help them out.

btw, Purigen should pull out those tannins. I soaked each piece for less than a day and my water never turned brown,
