I have two midas in my 400 gallon tank with a bunch of other cichlids, and we noticed last week they were acting very aggressive towards everybody that swam around a certain area but not each other. They seemed to be protecting that area, but I didn't see any eggs or anything like that. Wondering if it's possible they are pairing up? They aren't doing it now, but I was curious why they were doing it for a few days last week. It was very noticeable. The smaller one cleared out all the gravel from that area right to the bottom too.

Yes its possible for them to breed and lay eaggs... Wether the eggs hatch depends on how vigilant everyone else is to eat them lol

In a community tank with other fish the stress of other fish around might be enougj for them to stop the process. Although if the female is gravid with eggs she will lay them full tank or not.

Yes they can and do all the time. That is a problem when having a pair breed in a tank with other fish is they will generally own one side of the tank or an area. They will keep other fish away from there eggs. But once they hatch you have the dilemma of what to do if you want to save the fry. Either suck the fry out or remove all the other fish.

I have different fish that breed in my tanks. Mostly African cihlids though
