My male and female dovii mated once again a week ago and had around 200-300 fry. Both parents were very protective of them and the mom was always by their side. When I turned on my tank lights this morning there are no fry in sight and there are some dead ones lying in the rocks. My male and female are on opposite sides of the tank and my male won't even come out from underneath his rock. This is unusual because he is always chasing me back and forth when I walk through the room. What's going on?!

dovii are smart, while i dont think they are actually mourning, they could be doing something similar to that.
also check you water quality a die off of babies means there may be something wrong, just the babies were the first ones to be affected

This is true. I will check the nitrates, nitrates, and ammonia. But the weird thing is is that I did 40% water change just 5 days ago and the water is looking good.

Sounds like a tank spike....What size tank?

yeah, it sounds like it was your water quality that possibly killed your fry.
your dovii parents are probably feeling the spike.
check your water and maybe do a 40-50 percent water change everyday for a week.
your dovii should be swimming around again after the first or second day.

hmm does sound like a SPIKE too me aswell, sorry for your losses

if it is a spike it would explain there "mourning" but i have known fish to act "sader" after another fish dieing.

after my female freddy died her mate went berserk for about a week, not exactly mourning but a reaction to his mates death

I checked my water params and everything is where it needs to be. I have no idea what happened to the fry. I will do a water change just to make sure. I guess it's just one of those mysteries.

As to fish emotions, my big jag paralyzed himeself by hitting the glass. His buddy, my albino Oscar tried in vain to nudge the jag to try and get him back upright. The Oscar did this for days. When he finally figured out he couldn't get him back upright, he stood guard over the jag to keep anyone else from picking on him. When I finally gave up on the jag healing and euthanized him, the Oscar's behavior was clearly affected. I honestly think the Oscar was sad his buddy the jag was gone.
