Is there any downside to doing huge water changes? One of my fish is sick and I want to do around a 50% or more water change in a 150 gallon. I have an eheim cannister filter that holds all the beneficial bacteria. If I fill it up at around the current temperature and use water conditioner is there anything else that could be a problem? Could I get away with doing big water changes every few days? Again the filter is a canister and there is no undergravel filter.

Thanks

you'll be fine if chemistry of the water is the same which it should be. A lot of people do multiple big changes like the a couple times a week anyways.

What kind of fish do you have in that tank?

How long ago was your last w/c, and how much did you remove/replace?

I do 80-90% every 5-7 days. Just match the temps. Note if you haven't done a WC in a long time, start with smaller changes less frequently to limit a rapid swing in water values. Once you've established a regular large routine, normally not a huge problem. Biggest issue is if you have a trusted water source. If you do a massive change, and you water source is contaminated, this would cause a problem. I use Lake water at my house here in WA, so I know that the water is always consistent. At my place down in AZ, I use more caution because it's municipal supply and they can overdose ammonia ect.
Hope helps.

I do 65-85% every week.

50% is not a huge water change.
I've done 90% water changes 2x a day for a month and saw improved activity levels and brighter colors on every fish in the tank.

I do 2-30 percent water changes a week. But at times I'll do 50 percent when I need to.

It all depends on bio load. More fish more water changes as simple as that. One goldfish in a 200 gallon tank you can probably do once a month you'll be fine or even longer
