2 weeks ago i got a 3" female Green Terror, she is in a tank with a same size Blue Acara (I am 98% sure a Blue Acara). Ive now noticed loads of eggs which she keeps fanning and lets the acara go near. She somtimes leaves the eggs quickly to go and get the acara, and nudges him to stay near the eggs with her, though he does look like he sniff's them then wonders off spaced out like usual. I can see black bits in the eggs so i think they may be fertile - though i dont know if i see movement. A week ago they were flaring chins at each other and splashing would go on as they chased each other, it didnt look friendly.

I don't think the eggs will become anything, i think she is too young. Is interbreeding possible, what would the babies be like?

I'm so confused!

Sadly, yes they can interbreed. They are in the same genus, Andinoacara. The mixes I've seen look like a dull, washed out blue acara.

Aw that is such a shame :( They are both beautifully coloured, Well if some do hatch i hope they catch the terror's looks and the acara's temperment. Didnt think it was possible. Thankyou for the reply. At least they are happy with each other

Just look at it this way. You can use the offspring as food for your other fish.

When did they get switched from Aequidens?

Well they haven't been Aequidens for about twenty years or so, but becuase they were never placed in another genus they were considered orphans ... hence why you would usually see the entire blue acara group listed as 'Aequidens' instead.

Luckily, someone (well a few someones) described the new genus this last December (2008) for all the blue acara group cichlids. Now that the genus level has been worked out, hopefully someone will work on describing the saums ...
